Skiing as an Activity Sport

There seems little left in terms of what can be done as an activity sport as the more imaginative activity sports people of the world dream up new ways to speed, fly or float. The common factor in many of the newer activity sports has been the sail. This was initially used on the waves as the wind surfer, and then again when people decided a wing could be attached to their backs and took to hang gliding. So upward, or downward, went the sports and one of the latest is the kite board which is something to speed along sandy beaches on, or in. In the winter sports world the development has been with skis and there has been the great popularity of the snowboard. But there too, there are areas which involve trying to fly with ski hang gliding. The participant simply skis down a slope, gets up some speed, and then with a hang glider attached - whoosh – they are in the air!

The ski hang glider is as reliant on the snow fall reports as anyone as the sport needs good snow covered slopes to get the speed up. It’s not an exact sport, and obviously relies, like the kite boarding, on wind speed and direction. But unlike the traditional hang glider who simply jumps off a high cliff, the skier has to travel down….and that makes for some further difficulties. Thus, mountains are a typical hazard as they can get in the way, just when the flier thought all was going well.

At the end of a day skiing, snowboarding or hang gliding it is something of a relief to get back to one of the luxury ski chalets which will have a good hot shower or maybe even a Jacuzzi. The great mountains of Europe are here, and none less so than the mighty Matterhorn which presides over the Valais region. Although the economics of Europe have changed considerably there are those who still feel that Switzerland is a tad expensive. In fact it isn’t as expensive as some of the other European countries and it has not had to cope with the troubles of EU members, as it is not a member of the EU. But there are preconceptions about Switzerland so the cost conscious winter traveller may want to look around and get a last minute ski deal in France, which is not that far away.

A location which attracts both the downhill and the cross country skier is Scandinavia. The more strenuous cross country version stems from the real need of the people from the north to get around on skis rather than walking. The development of cross country skiing in the region has led to some very good resorts which run from great catered ski chalets in Finland to simple rustic properties in Northern Sweden

But back in the central European scene the emphasis is now on the quality of the accommodation and there have been changes here as well. At one time it was simply a matter of booking ski chalets in France and then going out on the slopes. But the advent of places which have the advantages of the big chalet for a group with catering included have made people re think the holiday. This makes it better for all parties and does save an argument as to who is going to do the cooking that night. In amongst those deals there will be places which hold a special attraction for visitors and that comes down to personal choice. There are the swish resorts such as St Moritz where it is less about skiing than maybe the style of the hotel. In the les arcs ski chalets of France there will be more emphasis on the practicalities of the accommodation. So it is all a matter of choice, as it is with all those other activity sports mentioned earlier. Be it the chamonix ski chalet or the one which is centred right in the middle of the mountains, there is most certainly going to be the ideal location for individuals or large groups. At the end of the day, what would appear to be most important is not whether it is one of the les deux alpes ski chalets or it is in another region, but more a case of whether the skiing is good.
